Chat support: is the job being automated?
There is no occupation code for this job.The classification systems that labour statistics are built on — SOC in the US, NOC in Canada — were written before the title existed, and every measurement of AI exposure is published against them. So the honest answer starts by saying what is actually being measured.
What the figures below actually describe
Chat support has no occupation code of its own — these figures describe Customer service representatives, the closest row the taxonomy offers.
Chat-based support is not separated in SOC. Customer service representatives covers it, and the figures are that occupation's — including the ones that make it the most exposed row in the dataset.

- Modelled split
- 70% automated · 85% reshaped
Exposure is measured from Microsoft Research Copilot telemetry and the Anthropic Economic Index; the split is modelled. Full sources, task breakdown and the Canadian NOC concordance are on the customer service representatives page. Figures last updated 2026-06.
Where this work goes
Start with the part nobody should soften: at the 100th percentile this is the most exposed row in the entire dataset. There is no corner of this job AI does not already reach. What the measured split says next is less obvious and more useful — the observed usage here leans augmentation rather than automation, which is the only reason anything survives here at all. So the honest read is not that the work disappears. It is that the queue does. What survives sits upstream of it: designing what the agent says, tuning what it deflects, owning the answer base it draws on, and building the escalation path for everything it gets wrong. That is a different job from this one, not a promotion within it, and it is upstream of the queue rather than a faster way through it.

This is the shape the work takes, not a job we are placing you in, and it is done both inside companies and independently. What we have not measured is the route: how often someone makes this move, or how long it takes.
What is happening to this whole function
This title sits inside Customer Service & Support. The evidence for what is changing across that function — and the strongest case against that reading — is set out separately.
Customer Service & SupportAn occupation average is not a read on you.
The figures above describe a row in a taxonomy. What decides whether this transition is available to you is narrower and more specific: what you have actually owned, and whether it reads that way to someone who was not there. That is what the audit scores.
